Public housing stock in reverse under Labor

Liberal Party Victoria

Life continues to get harder for Victorians as new figures confirm the Labor Government has demolished more than double the number of extra public homes it has built since 2019.

The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing annual report has confirmed that since the launch of Labor’s “Big Housing Build” in 2020, only 12 extra homes a week have been created, while at the same time since 2019, 26 homes a week have been disposed of.

The report also confirms that families escaping domestic violence are now waiting two years for a home, while the number of families waiting on the Victorian Housing Register continues to climb with more than 65,195 waiting for a home. At the rate Labor is creating new homes, homeless Victorians can expect to be on the waiting list for years.

Despite the need for a clear strategy to reduce Victoria’s ballooning housing waitlist, for two years the Labor Government has refused to release the Housing Assistance additional service delivery data report, which details what homes the State has.

Shadow Minister for Housing, Richard Riordan, said: “³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾less Victorians have seen little benefit from an almost five billion dollar spend on public housing.

“The homelessness waiting list is growing more quickly than the Allan Labor Government can build new homes. Over the last five years more families have been displaced than have been given a home.

“It is inconceivable that in the middle of a housing crisis the Labor Government cannot tell the pubic how many homes it has. New Housing Minister Harriet Shing must immediately release the public housing stocktake list her two predecessors had kept hidden, because in a housing emergency you can’t begin to solve the problem if you don’t even know what it is.”
