People with Disability Australia is pleased to announce that Megan Spindler-Smith has been appointed as Deputy CEO.
Megan, who uses they/them pronouns, joins the organisation at a key time of reform for the disability sector. They bring their lived experience as a person with disability and expertise in strategic organisational leadership, diversity & inclusion through an intersectional disability lens, and cultural change to the role.
“I am honoured to be taking on the role of Deputy CEO of an organisation that has progressed and championed the rights of people with disability for over 40 years.
“We are faced with once-in-a-generation reform following the Disability Royal Commission, and I look forward to working with our members, Board and staff to ensure this reform is not just for but with people with disability.
“As a disabled person I know how much more needs to be done before society is fully accessible and inclusive and we can have equity and choice within our society. I have always been a vocal advocate highlighting injustice for marginalised experiences, but what excites me about this opportunity is that I am now joining others in calling for OUR full inclusion, while recognising the privilege a role like this provides me. I can’t wait to get started,” said Spindler-Smith.
Prior to working with PWDA, Spindler-Smith held senior roles at Yooralla, ABC, UTS and the NSW Department of Education. They are an accomplished executive leader and passionate champion of intersectional disability rights and inclusion.
PWDA CEO Sebastian Zagarella has welcomed the appointment.
“Megan is a respected leader and advocate for inclusion and accessibility. They are known as a leader who inspires, collaborates and gets things done. Given their experience as a person with disability and intersectional leadership approach I know they will make an impact on our organisation and the wider community,” said Mr Zagarella.
