Council is proud to announce the recipients of the Special Heritage Fund for 2019-20.

“Council established the Special Heritage Fund in 2015 to encourage owners of public and community buildings which are heritage items to conserve, restore and reuse their properties,” Mayor Tim Overall said.

“It is good to see applications for the fund at a high standard and competitive, as well as spread throughout the region. This year there are two projects in Hoskinstown, two in Queanbeyan and one each in Braidwood and Bungendore.”

The Special Heritage Fund is available to assist public and community buildings such as churches or buildings owned or managed by community based not-for-profit organisations listed on the heritage schedule.

The successful applicants for funding this year included the Hoskinstown War Memorial Hall who will undertake hall renovations; the Anglican Hall Braidwood who are looking to repair the ceiling, remove asbestos, and replace joists in the kitchen and St Stephens Presbyterian Church in Queanbeyan who applied for funding to replace wiring, gutters, drainage, fix the lightning conductor to the bell tower and structural work.

Other projects supported were the Queanbeyan Masonic Building for painting of the exterior, repairs to the brickwork and work on the roof; St Mary’s Church in Bungendore to restore stained glass windows; and St Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Hoskinstown to replace roof, guttering and downpipes.

A total of $150,000 was available through the Special Heritage Fund for 2019-20 and nine applications were received. All the applications received were of a high standard.

Council also supported seven private owners of heritage buildings around the local government area under the Local Heritage Grants 2019-20. The Local Heritage Grants program has $20,000 available and is partly funded by the Office of Environment and Heritage. These grants fund small improvements to privately owned heritage items or buildings within a heritage conservation area.
