Twelve fresh and exciting Queensland online vertical format series will each receive $10,000 in production funding support through Screen Queensland’s Channel Lab: Short Cuts initiative.

The 17 participants-along with their teams-will develop, produce and release a minimum of three episodes for Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts or TikTok under the tutelage of industry mentors through tailored workshops.

The selected projects represent a collection of factual and scripted stories from around the state and include children’s series, murder mysteries and dramatic comedies.

Eleanor Somerville and Rae Choi’s factual series Full Friend profiles 16-year-old indie rock artist and songwriter Ixara Dorizac and her band ixaras in the lead up to their first EP launch and tour.

It’s Giving is a comedy-drama series from Joshua Tate, Wilk Crate and Perry Mooney (Population 11, Gold Diggers, Troppo) which sees two nervous first-daters navigate cultural identity, disability and queerness in the modern dating scene.

Far North Queensland’s Rachael Terry brings the story of 80s aerobic enthusiast and menopausal mentor Tammy Tooth from the stage to the vertical screen and three regional and remote Queensland communities with Tammy Tooth: Working Your Remote Regions.

Screen Queensland’s Chief Creative Officer Dr Belinda Burns said Screen Queensland is proud to support the next generation of local screen creatives through the second initiative in the agency’s new online program, Channel Lab.

“Online platforms provide an accessible space for creatives to find their audience, develop their creative practice and break the normal conventions of screen storytelling.

“These spaces are forming an important part of our state’s screen ecosystem with a growing emphasis on the creator economy as audiences are increasingly consuming narrative content online.

“These platforms are now well-established distribution channels in their own right and also provide valuable training grounds for the filmmakers of tomorrow.”
