On July 5 the Queensland Police Basketball Club (QPBC) went face to face with the best basketball players of the Queensland Fire Department (QFD).
It was a nail-biting game with the crowd on the edge of their seats as the players dribbled and dunked their way up and down the court.
The QPBC team were down 53-46 with only nine minutes left on the clock, when the team found an extra gear and dunked their way to glory.
In the final minutes of the game with a clean swish, QPBC won 67-64 and took home the trophy.
With significant scoring contributions from Constable Declan Johnston (24 pts) and Detective Senior Constable Wal Gubesch (14 pts), and a clutch performance from Senior Constable Matt Scott (11 pts), the QPBC team were too good for QFD in a tight fought battle.
Captain of the QPBC team, Acting Senior Sergeant Luke Hedges, was integral in rallying the team and lifted the intensity of the team’s performance to winning status.
The showdown was a curtain raiser for South Districts Spartans NBL1 First Nations Round, part of recognising and celebrating NAIDOC Week.
QPBC would like to extend a huge thank you to QFD for the friendly game – it’s always fun with a bit of banter when Queensland’s frontline services come together!
Did you know?
Up until July 1, QFD was formerly known as Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).
State Emergency Services (SES) were previously part of QFES but transitioned to QPS on June 3.
The transition marks a new era in Queensland’s disaster and emergency management bringing Queensland frontline staff together for a safe community.
