“It’s still October but Queensland already has bushfires burning and many people are rightly worried about the prospect of a catastrophic summer of heatwaves and fire storms, fuelled by the continued burning of coal and gas,” said the Australian Conservation Foundation’s climate change program manager Gavan McFadzean.
“Our hearts go out to communities in pain right now, for people who have lost loved ones, houses and livelihoods, for animals killed and wildlife homes destroyed.
“Queenslanders can see how the people they love and the places they love are under threat from climate change fuelled by coal and gas.
“It’s shocking that communities and wildlife cop it while fossil fuel giants like Woodside and Santos rake in massive profits and have plans to keep expanding for many decades – at the expense of the climate we all share.
“Far from reducing their climate pollution, big polluters like Woodside and Santos plan to keep expanding and keep supercharging climate destruction, fuelling heatwaves, bushfires and coral bleaching.
“The Palaszczuk and Albanese governments must demonstrate the same courage as those on the front line of this extreme weather disaster. It’s time to say no to new or expanded coal and gas projects.”
