Queenslanders have paused for Firefighters Remembrance Day, held on the 10th day, of the 10th month, to remember and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Fire and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan said services were held across the state to honour the 55 firefighters on the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Honour Roll.
“On Firefighters Remembrance Day, we take a moment to acknowledge those firefighters who lost their lives protecting Queenslanders,” Mr Ryan said.
“Between 1877 and 2017, we have lost 55 firefighters – today we thank them for their service.
“This year, two firefighters have been added to the Honour Roll, Superintendent Nicholas F Peut and firefighter Benjamin James Hitchings.
“Both were killed in the line of duty, in 1892 and 1933 respectively, and their stories were discovered in the QFES archives.
“We remember the contribution made not only by these individuals, but also their families, friends and communities.”
QFES Commissioner Greg Leach said flags were flown at half-mast at stations across the state.
“We come together to honour all of our dedicated firefighters and acknowledge the work they do day in, day out,” Mr Leach said.
“Firefighters attend a variety of incidents putting their lives on the line at bushfires, structure fires, traffic crashes, technical rescues and so much more.”
Mr Leach encouraged everyone to observe a minute’s silence to reflect on the crucial role of firefighters.
“Each day they put on their uniform and commit to protecting the safety of our community,” he said.
“Today I remember the 55 firefighters who we have lost and the firefighters who represent QFES every day. Thank you.”
