The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) thanks Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews for his service after he announced his retirement.
Mr Andrews announced his retirement at a press conference yesterday, effective from 5pm today, Wednesday 27 September. A caucus meeting today will decide the new Premier.
RACGP Victoria Chair Dr Anita Munoz thanked the Premier for his service.
“On behalf of Victoria’s GPs, I’d like to thank Premier Andrews for his leadership particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dr Munoz said.
“The pandemic was a challenging time for GPs and the communities we care for, and Premier Andrews had to make tough decisions to save lives and protect our frontline health workers.
“The Andrews Government has been supportive of general practice, including providing additional funding for state GP-led respiratory clinics, GP urgent care clinics, and grants supporting GPs to deliver influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations.
“It has also provided incentives to boost the number of GPs in training, including $30,000 top-up payments, available for those applying for next year’s training intake.
“General practice is essential for the health and wellbeing of Victorians. It is what keeps people healthy and out of hospital. I look forward to working with Victoria’s next Premier to ensure general practice remains strong and sustainable in our state, and we have enough GPs in every community.”
