A timely update for the Rushworth to Murchison Rail Trail Project, with the $3 million development progressing through Campaspe Shire Council’s planning stages.

Mayor Chrissy Weller said the trail project will develop 11 kilometres of the former railway track, between Rushworth and the Campaspe Shire boundary of Channel Inlet Road.

“The Rail Trail is an exciting venture and a long-awaited major development for the community, promising recreational and social benefits.

“The scenic trail will meander through the countryside, alongside the Waranga Basin becoming part of a broader rail trail network that will also boost regional growth, encourage visitors and increase economic opportunity in the region.”

Mayor Weller said the trail will include a 2.5 metre wide asphalt path at the Rushworth end and a further 10 kilometres of gravel path to join with the Murchison trail. The development requires the repair of six VicTrack bridges.

“The works will be completed in stages, with community engagement and design underway and due for completion by the end of the year.

“Council has met with community groups and adjacent landowners to the trail, with the general consensus being one of enthusiasm.”

Mayor Weller said the next stages will include approvals, project tenders and construction, with works to be finished by April 2024. Residents can keep up to date with the development via the Council .

The project is being funded by the Federal Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and the Bushfire Recovery Grant Program.
