Make no mistake, the Andrews Labor Government’s move to exempt social housing from paying rates is yet another hit on the pocket of Victorians.
Shadow Treasurer David Davis said Victorian ratepayers will foot the multi-million dollar bill.
“There is no such thing as a free lunch. Exempting themselves from paying these rates will leave a $140 million black-hole in council budgets, which can only be filled by council passing the cost to every day Victorians through things like higher rates, waste charges and fire services – or by cutting services.”
“Councils are saying rates are set to go up by as much as $80 a year.
“This isn’t about social housing; this is about the Andrews Labor Government seeking to shift the rates cost from their budget bottom line, to the bank accounts of everyday Victorians.
“If the Andrews Labor Government hadn’t wasted $24 billion on “big bill” budget blowouts, they wouldn’t have to increase taxes and exempt themselves from paying their own bills.
“It’s the same old Labor. When they run out of money, they come after yours.
“All Victorians are paying the price of Labor’s waste and budget incompetence.”
