Reaching CrossFit’s Global Stage

Department of Defence

For the first time, ADF had individual representation at the Torian Pro, Oceania’s premier CrossFit event.

Sergeant Sheree Willcox, a physical training instructor, placed 21st out of 40 women in Torian’s elite individual division; however, she had already secured her ticket and will compete in the Worldwide Masters CrossFit Games in Birmingham, Alabama, in August.

She trains two to three hours a day, six days a week in the lead-up to competitions and had always wanted to make the CrossFit Games.

Before participating at the Torian Pro, participants compete in the CrossFit Open, an online-judged event.

If they are categorised in the top 25 per cent worldwide, they advance to the CrossFit quarter finals, which is also online.

“I did one workout for the open elite individual division and one for the masters division. They were the same workout, but just on two different leader boards,” Sergeant Willcox said.

From that, the top 40 compete in the CrossFit semi-finals (Torian Pro).

Sergeant Willcox started CrossFit 10 years ago and goes into all competitions with a strategy.

Her strategy this time was to familiarise herself with the rules, and workout to ensure her form was correct.

“I knew what I needed to do out there,” she said.

Over the three-day event, competitors have time-capped workouts, with exercises progressing from toes-to-bars to muscle-ups.

Lieutenant Jordan Green, who started CrossFit two years ago, placed 29th in the Oceania Championship division.

She said she found confidence and comfort in extensive training.

“I feel like I do everything and anything in that moment to do the best that I can; it feels like a switch is flicked,” she said.

“I just become laser-focused on that moment.”

The division comprised of 50 teams, each with two men and two women.

Lieutenant Green said more people should check out local CrossFit affiliates for fitness and socialisation.

“Everyone’s supportive of each other, and you can push yourself more than many other sports,” she said.
