The Territory Labor Government is continuing to support economic development through major housing projects across East Arnhem Land.
Ramingining and Galiwin’ku are bustling with housing works, with locals doing the heavy lifting to build homes and complete their apprenticeships.
In Ramingining, a new 33-lot subdivision is complete, along with eleven new homes under construction, marking the halfway mark of the housing program in the community.
Ramingining community is set to receive 51 new homes, of which 22 are already complete.
Aboriginal Business Enterprise (ABE) Deltareef is heading the current works, supporting locals to complete apprenticeships while being employed to help build the homes.
James Gengi is a Ramingining local who is making cabinetry for the new homes and is currently enrolled in a Certificate II in Construction through Charles Darwin University.
Deltareef and Charles Darwin University have supported James’s study by providing the classroom training required for James’s apprenticeship on-site at Ramingining, which alleviates the need for James to travel to Darwin for the training.
James has achieved four tickets for the operation of a Bobcat, Telehandler, Loader and Excavator, with training provided by Deltareef as part of his employment.
In Galiwin’ku, housing works are close to the halfway mark, with 40 new homes delivered by Aboriginal Business Enterprise Bukmak Constructions.
Galiwin’ku community is set to receive 87 new houses as part of the $51.5 million contract awarded back in 2021.
A new 27 lot subdivision in Galiwin’ku is nearing completion with new housing construction to commence within the subdivision in late 2024.
Galiwin’ku is also programmed to receive Room to Breathe upgrades to 45 homes, of which nine are complete.
The Territory Labor Government is continuing to make headway in improving living conditions by delivering houses in remote communities and supporting Territory businesses that provide work and qualifications with a focus on Aboriginal workforce and local Territorians.
