Up to 50 vulnerable men in need of crisis and transitional accommodation will now be supported following the completion of the Hobart Bethlehem House.
The Rockliff Liberal Government is doing what matters to Tasmanians through its $20 million investment in the contemporary, fit-for-purpose facility.
Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street highlighted the importance of this opening as part of the Government’s plan to eliminate homelessness by 2043 at the opening of this facility.
“The Rockliff Liberal Government believes that housing is a fundamental human right and Tasmanians experiencing homelessness deserve fit-for-purpose, contemporary accommodation for various needs,” Minister Street said.
“Having launched Tasmania’s first ever Housing Strategy yesterday, I know how critical this new facility is to ensuring we can deliver more homes for a growing Tasmania and end homelessness by 2043.
“The design of the facility includes lounge areas, recreational space, a cafeteria-style kitchen and a manual workshop training room for skills development.
“Three secure kennels and an exercise area for men with pets who need shelter have been included in the new facility because we know that some people may sleep rough to avoid giving up their pets.
“Along with the co-located 24-bed Waratah supported accommodation facility that has been operating on site since the beginning of 2021, this site, which is the largest in Tasmania, can now accommodate up to 74 men.
“Our Government is aware that those living in crisis accommodation require additional supports and that is why we also invest over $38 million a year in wrap around services to help vulnerable Tasmanians maintain stable accommodation.”
The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on our long-term plan and doing what matters to Tasmanians by implementing the most ambitious long-term housing plan in the State’s history backed by our commitment to deliver 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032.
