Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has been proven right, yet again with the revelation that the Medevac Bill, controversially passed through parliament in February, will cost taxpayers dearly.
Last night’s federal budget showed that reopening the Christmas Island Detention Centre, to accommodate medical evacuations from Manus Island and Nauru, will cost the Australian taxpayer $180 million dollars this financial year.
But the bad news doesn’t end there. That figure assumes that there will be no more illegal boat arrivals.
If the people smuggling trade resumes or continues after 1 July, that $180 million will become the minimum recurrent cost to keep the centre open.
So Senator Bernardi’s assertion that this rushed piece of legislation would be very costly for Australia has unfortunately proved right.
Those to blame for this unnecessary impost on taxpayers are South Australian Independent Senator Tim Storer, South Australian Green Sarah Hanson-Young, Victoria’s Derryn Hinch and the rest of the Greens/Labor rabble who backed this ham-fisted attempt to undermine our migration system.
The Conservative Party’s prescient approach to legislation, putting everything though a common sense filter, is another compelling reason to vote for your Australian Conservatives Senate candidate at next month’s federal election.
Senator Bernardi has told Sky News, passing common sense legislation isn’t rocket science.
