RECKŌNING performance celebrates Indigenous cultures

In a large-scale performance of Indigenous culture, the community have a chance to enjoy an award-winning production called RECKŌNING – Te Waiata Paihere Wairua (The Sounds of Woven Souls) on Tuesday 22 August.

After premiering at the Melbourne Fringe Festival and winning four awards, this captivating work is praised for its power, musicality and raw emotion. Fusing Indigenous cultures from Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Te Whēnua Moemoeā (Land of the Dreamtime) Australia, it features an incredible cast of talented singers, dancers and storytellers.

This show is an acknowledgment of past injustices, a passage through understanding, and a commemoration of Indigenous cultural perseverance, inventiveness and power. These remarkable artists unite individual stories of their ancestors which probe the strength of connecting to their bloodlines.

Employing striking visual projections, emotionally charged song, deeply personal story telling and genuine raw emotions of anger, grief, sadness and joy, RECKŌNING leads its audience through a process of truth-telling and truth-accepting that subtly triggers states of empathy and understanding, whilst the original songs uplift the audience.

This is achieved by presenting the themes of the show in a visually beautiful way with original costuming, symbolic staging, a bright engaging colour pallet, atmospheric lighting and environment, inspiring lyrics in language and an utterly dance-inspiring contemporary sound by Samuel Gaskin and The Merindas.
