Premier Mark McGowan has proudly confirmed the State Government is making a record $11 million donation to Telethon, to honour Western Australia’s bravest children and boost their health and wellbeing.
WA’s sick kids and their families are at the forefront of the historic donation, which has been made on behalf of all Western Australians.
The record contribution includes a $4 million recurrent donation plus a one-off additional donation for 2022-23 of $5 million, as well as an injection of $2 million to the WA Child Health Research Fund (WACRF), which will deliver vital progress in the search for answers to improve little lives.
The McGowan Government has long been a proud and loyal supporter of Telethon and has a strong history of helping the Channel 7 Telethon Trust.
This year’s donation builds on last year’s contribution of $10 million, which was also a record.
The generous donation will enable Telethon to support almost 100 children’s charities at grassroots level across WA to deliver equipment for children in hospital as well as critical services and programs for children living with disabilities.
As stated by Premier and Treasurer Mark McGowan:
“On behalf of all Western Australians, I am incredibly proud to be making a record donation to Telethon, which will deliver real health and research outcomes to almost 100 very worthy causes.
“Telethon isn’t just the biggest fundraiser per capita anywhere in the world, it is an integral part of the fabric of Western Australia – an institution that does special things for our community.
“The State Government has a long and proud history with Telethon to help some of our bravest children and their families.
“I always marvel at the generosity of Western Australians when it comes to Telethon – a generosity that we all should be very proud of.
“From the kids who ring into the phone room to donate their pocket money, to the top end of town, every dollar makes a difference to helping little lives.”
As stated by Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:
“The contribution Telethon makes to our community and the health of our children cannot be underestimated.
“Since it began 55 years ago, Telethon has assisted generations of Western Australians during times of need and raised hundreds of millions of dollars.
“I am so pleased the McGowan Government is able to continue our support of this incredibly worthy cause with a donation of $11 million.
“As Health Minister, I see every day the difference medical research and innovations, such as those funded by Telethon, can make to the lives of young people in our community.”
