The Rockliff Liberal Government is continuing to boost police numbers with a record breaking number of new police constables graduating today from the Tasmania Police Academy.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said there have never been more police in Tasmania than there are today with the 74 new constables joining Tasmania Police.
“The Tasmanian Government has invested more than $730 million in additional funding into Tasmania Police since 2014 and is committed to increasing police numbers to 1454 by July 2026. We are well and truly on track to achieve this goal,” Minister Ellis said.
“This investment in extra police means we have been able to establish the Crime and Intelligence Command, the Road Policing Service, a full time Special Operations Group, and the Family and Sexual Violence Command.
“The new constables will be stationed throughout the State – 16 at Burnie, 16 at Launceston, 13 at Hobart, 12 at Glenorchy, 10 at Devonport, 4 at Bellerive and 3 at Bridgewater.
“The graduating constables have successfully completed an extensive 30-week training course in the South and North of the State, with the Northern course running for its second year. The Launceston Satellite Recruitment Course allowed 20 of today’s graduates to train closer to home and family.
“We wish our new officers every success as they embark on a diverse, challenging and rewarding career with Tasmania Police, and we encourage other Tasmanians to consider this as a fantastic career option,” Minister Ellis said.
This record graduation boosts police numbers to 1431 officers which is the highest establishment level in Tasmanian history.
