The Rockliff Liberal Government is boosting police numbers to a record high of 1,449 by June 2026.
Today, Tasmania Police inducted the largest recruit course in its history, with 80 recruits beginning their training to become sworn officers over a 31-week training course.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, congratulated the newly inducted recruits for taking the first exciting step towards becoming a police officer.
“I know the 80 recruits will be welcomed by skilled colleagues who will guide them over the next 31 weeks, and into the future, as part of their learning in a rewarding career,” he said.
“This Government is committed to investing in our police service to keep Tasmanians safe and this investment is working. The recent Report on Government Services highlighted that Tasmania has more police staff per head of population than the national average, and Tasmania also leads the nation with the highest percentage of female police staff in its service.
“I would like to encourage anyone who is interested in joining Tasmania Police, particularly from the North and Northwest of the State, to make an enquiry.
“The Launceston Satellite Recruitment Course is helping train more police in our northern communities, and keep our recruits close to home and loved ones. Excitingly, 20 of the new police recruits inducted today will study in Launceston as part of the program’s second year.
