The Northern Territory Police (NT Police) Recruitment Team are on their way back to Darwin after a successful road trip attending two of Australia’s most iconic events; the Garma Festival in East Arnhem Land and the Mt Isa Rodeo in Queensland.
These events provided an invaluable opportunity for the team to connect with potential applicants and answer key questions about the rewarding and challenging career of policing in the Northern Territory.
On the first weekend of August, the team attended the Garma Festival, one of Australia’s most culturally significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander events. Recruitment officers were on-site throughout the festival, engaging with hundreds of attendees from across the nation. The team provided insights into the unique experiences and opportunities available for those considering a career policing in the NT, particularly in remote and culturally diverse communities. The festival’s atmosphere of cultural exchange and community made it an ideal setting for conversations about the vital role police officers play in fostering safety and understanding within remote Aboriginal communities.
The following weekend the NT Police Recruitment Team jumped the border to attend the Mt Isa Rodeo – the largest rodeo event in the Southern Hemisphere. The rodeo drew large crowds from all over Australia, providing an excellent platform for the recruitment team to reach potential applicants from all walks of life.
Why hit the Rodeo you say? Well there are similarities working on the land and serving in regional and remote areas of Australia. You have to be resilient, an excellent problem solver and be part of the local community you work in.
Attendance at these events underscores NT Police’s commitment to attracting a diverse range of applicants who are passionate about making a difference. It remains a top priority to ensure that prospective officers have all the information they need to make an informed decision about joining the police and there is no better way to deliver this information than an in-person chat.
Assistant Commissioner Hege Burns reiterated that “Engaging directly with potential recruits at events like Garma and the Mt Isa Rodeo allows us to share the unique opportunities that come with serving in the Northern Territory. We are looking for individuals who are not only up for the challenge but are also eager to contribute positively to our communities.”
