Redeveloped State Library Ground Floor Officially Open

Tasmanian Government

A stunning floor artwork will welcome visitors to the redeveloped State Library and Tasmanian Archives in Hobart.

Called tunapri, meaning ‘knowledge’ in palawa kani, the artwork by respected Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Caleb Nichols-Mansell reflects connection to country, community, culture and spirit.

The $1.7 million ground floor redevelopment of the State Library and Tasmanian Archives building, was officially opened today.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the reimagined space will be a central hub for visitors to relax, read and study.

“One of the key highlights of this redevelopment is the reversal of the staircase, enhancing flow and accessibility, and transforming the space into a welcoming and inviting environment for everyone,” Minister Palmer said.

“Whether you’re meeting friends, reading, or simply taking a break, the ground floor offers a perfect setting for all these activities.

“I invite all Tasmanians and visitors to explore and enjoy this vibrant new space – the gateway to Tasmania’s stories, history, culture, and our collective future.

“An important part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is to develop stronger communities and enhance our regions.”

The upgraded space provides an opportunity to showcase the State Library and Tasmanian Archives as a cultural destination.

Through exhibitions, events, and educational programs, it will engage both Tasmanians and visitors alike, offering a deeper appreciation of our shared history.

Congratulations to the project team, including Liminal Architecture, Vos Builders, and the staff at Libraries Tasmania, for their dedication and hard work in bringing this vision to life.
