It’s ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Recycling Week from Monday 9 November, and this year Brimbank City Council encourages households, schools, workplaces and businesses to choose to reuse.
This year’s theme, Recovery- A future beyond the bin, invites the community to recycle correctly and reduce waste by giving valuable items a second life.
One way residents can support Recycling Week is by joining Australia’s biggest community and sustainability event, the Garage Sale Trail on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November.
Last year, over 2,000 Brimbank citizens took part in the event, where almost 20,000 kilograms of items were reused locally. That’s the equivalent of nearly 30 trailer loads full of stuff!
For the first time ever Council will deliver the Garage Sale Trail: the recovery edition as a virtual event.
While the event allows people to make and save money by either hosting a sale or shopping the trail, an exciting new addition this year is a series of online masterclasses, the Trail Tutorials, which are free to join and open to all.
Brimbank Chief Executive Officer, Helen Morrissey, agrees the Trail Tutorials are a fantastic new addition to the Garage Sale Trail program as they allow people to learn how to minimise waste and repurpose household items even if they can’t host a sale.
“Last year’s turn out of Brimbank residents was an impressive reminder of the positive impact a community can have on their environment, with figures revealing a whopping 86 per cent of people were more likely to reduce waste after participating in the event,” she said.
The three virtual sessions will run in the lead up to the Garage Sale Trail weekend and will be hosted by some of Australia’s leading sustainability experts and eco-stylists, where they will offer practical tips on decluttering, mending and shopping second hand. The tutorials will also be recorded and can be found at:
