Reef Tourism Operators Funding Boost To Protect Reef

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The Australian Government is providing a $5 million boost to allow Reef tourism operators to continue work to help protect the Reef.

Tourism operators are some of the most frequent visitors to the Reef.

The Tourism Reef Protection Initiative delivers reef monitoring, conservation and protection activities across the Reef.

This 12 month extension of funding will enable the continuation of:

  • Eye on the Reef surveys
  • Crown of thorns starfish control
  • Drupella snail removal.

This funding boost will also enable tourism operators to provide assisted recovery and site intervention activities such as coral planting.

Tourism operators will be able to apply through a tender process. This funding is part of the Australian Government’s $1.2 billion investment in the Great Barrier Reef.

So far participating tourism operators have monitored and cared for 109 high value reefs, conducted over 15,000 reef health surveys, and removed 1,700 crown of thorns starfish and 215,000 Drupella snails.
