Under the cloak of darkness, two 1st Brigade units embark on a series of patrols, traversing the Kimberley’s intricate waterways in Zodiac small watercraft.
Their objective: to detect and deter any unlawful activities occurring under the cover of night.
The 8th/12th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, and 5th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, are joint forces on Operation Resolute to combat illegal activities in the Kimberley Marine Park.
Leading the teams in their mastery of littoral activities for the operation – by day and by night – was 1st Brigade’s littoral expert and troop sergeant Task Unit Predator Sergeant Bradley Congerton.
“In the Kimberley Marine Park, illegal activities such as people smuggling and unauthorised fishing pose a threat to both the environment and national security,” Sergeant Congerton said.
“The challenges of responding to these threats are enhanced when you’re under night conditions – you’re managing light discipline, you’re relying on your heightened senses and learned skills – and judging distances becomes extremely difficult in the ocean.
“By employing their newly enhanced littoral skills at night, the teams are positioned to intercept and assist the Australian Border Force respond to any illicit endeavours within the park’s waters, regardless of the time of arrival.”
Troop commander Task Unit Predator Captain Jacob Roberts said it was also an opportunity to perfect the concept of night littoral activities for future operations.
“As we patrol the park during Operation Resolute, we’re not just protecting our sovereignty, we’re refining our littoral tactics,” Captain Roberts said.
“Each mission is a chance to develop our techniques and enhance our understanding of the littoral environment, which will become a lot more pertinent in our near future.”
