Reminder for NYE and Australia Day – No camping at our beaches – Wollongong

We’re reminding everyone visiting our beaches, parks, and foreshore areas this New Year’s Eve and Australia Day – all tents and structures must come down by 8pm.

These holidays, Wollongong City Council will be running a community safety program to discourage illegal camping and dangerous parking.

We know that our beaches and foreshore areas are popular, and we want to make sure that everyone can enjoy these spaces safely. That’s why we’re asking everyone to follow the rules and listen to the advice of Council’s Compliance Officers.

Here are the rules:

  • While shade structures or tents are allowed during the day, they must be packed away by 8pm
  • It’s illegal to park a car on the grass reserve, median strips or across driveways.
  • Parking rules will remain in place during the public holidays.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that Council Compliance Officers will be taking a proactive approach to educating people on the rules around illegal camping and parking.

Those who chose not to follow the rules, he said, may be fined.

“Camping and staying overnight at parks or reserves is prohibited and we will make sure visitors are aware of these restrictions. Penalties do apply for dangerous and illegal parking practices. Camping and staying overnight in prohibited locations is also not on and will be policed. These rules are in place to limit damage to our reserves and parks,” Cr Bradbery.

“Please do the right thing when you visit our beaches, parks, and reserves. We want to make sure that everyone can enjoy our public spaces and we need your help to ensure that they remain in good condition.

“The same goes for rubbish. We will have extra bins and even some recycling bins at many of our popular foreshore locations. Please put your rubbish in the appropriate bin, and if for whatever reason you can’t immediately find one, hold onto your rubbish until you can dispose of it responsibly.”
