The latest Sports Innovation Report by the Australian Sports Technologies Network (ASTN) shows that Victoria continues to claim the largest share of the country’s $4.25 billion sportstech sector.
According to the annual report, nearly half (47%) of Australia’s sportstech jobs are based in Victoria, followed by New South Wales (27%) and Queensland (18%).
Of the 758 companies that make up Australia’s sportstech ecosystem, 312 (41%) are based in Victoria, employing more than 6,300 people, and bringing in a total of $1.67 billion annually.
Companies include well-known Australian brands like Catapult Sports, a wearable technologies company with contracts across the major leagues, as well as sportswear manufacturer 2XU, based in Cremorne.
Chair of ASTN, Dr Martin Schlegel, said that the sportstech sector has exceeded all expectations in this year’s report as it surpasses $4 billion in revenue.
‘There’s still an enormous amount of untapped opportunity in the local sportstech ecosystem,’ said Dr Schlegel.
As the peak body for sports technology and innovation, ASTN has developed a detailed economic impact analysis on Australia’s sportstech industry. The 2023 report builds on the findings from ASTN’s inaugural report in 2022.
Last year, the Victorian Government announced it would back the state’s growing sportstech sector with a $4 million investment to establish the Australian Sports Innovation Centre for Excellence in Cremorne.
Led by ASTN, the sports innovation centre is helping to further bolster Victoria’s position as Australia’s leader in sportstech.
