Dr Amanda Gwee has been awarded a prestigious fellowship to tackle drug-resistant infections.
Dr Gwee, from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and the University of Melbourne’s Department of Paediatrics, has received the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Research Establishment Fellowship to produce practical solutions that optimise the use of anti-infective drugs in children.
In collaboration with the MCRI Digital Health team and Curve Tomorrow, Dr Gwee has developed an app that enables “precision-dosing” of antibiotics by creating a specific antibiotic dose for a particular child.
“RACP funding has provided me with the resources to validate this app in three Australian hospitals. This, in turn, will enable me to translate the app into clinical practice in other hospitals,” she said.
Dr Gwee said she hoped to leverage the fellowship to secure extra funding to ensure the app would be a sustainable resource for all children.
RACP Research Establishment Fellowships are available to fellows and trainees who want to establish themselves in a research career.
The fellowship aims to encourage and support the promotion of research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP.
