A new park in Newport West is ready to be opened and residents are invited to celebrate its launch on 11 December.
The reserve on Blenheim Road will provide a great recreational space for people to come together, particularly when using other nearby facilities.
Large groups of people frequently visit the area, including for parties and get togethers at the Altona Miniature Railway; sports clubs using the sportsgrounds on the Bayside College Paisley campus; and during Eid festival and Friday afternoon prayer times at the Australian Islamic Centre.
The park showcases native trees, shrubs and groundcovers and celebrates biodiversity with a balance between grass areas and planting. Water features have been included to provide a more relaxing environment.
The key features of the reserve include:
- Entry plaza with rain garden plantings and trees;
- Two picnic areas – one with a sheltered barbecue and picnic seating, the other with platform benches in a grassed area;
- Sand pit with swing, diggers and sand wheel;
- Climbing tower with climbing walls, two slides and a viewing platform;
- Forest walk along a tree-lined avenue with bird sculptures;
- Meditation space with timber deck and platform seats with plantings; and
- Unisex toilet facility.
A family-friendly event will officially open the reserve on Sunday 11 December 2022 between 10am and 12pm. It will include face painting, coffee and ice cream vans, finger food, a talk about local birds, free plant giveaways and music.
“This beautiful new park will be a great space for local residents and visitors to meet, share a picnic, enjoy the new play equipment and climbing tower, go for walks or simply enjoy some quiet reflection time,” Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Cr Tony Briffa, said.
“It’s a unique space that really complements the neighbouring open spaces in the area at Loft Reserve and the broader Paisley Park precinct. I’m sure it will become a popular spot for locals, particularly over the upcoming summer months.
“I look forward to seeing lots of community members come to celebrate the launch of this new park.”
