Anglo American and BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) have again demonstrated the industry’s commitment to world class rehabilitation across thousands of hectares of land in regional Queensland.
Queensland Resources Council (QRC) Chief Executive, Ian Macfarlane said the industry upholds the highest environmental standards.
“I congratulate BMA and Anglo American on today’s announcements which reaffirms industry’s pledge to return mined land to post-mining uses,” said Mr Macfarlane.
“Anglo American is investing more than $162 million rehabilitating its mine sites over the next five years and has been working with METS Ingnited* to roll out cutting-edge technology. Emapper uses drone technology to aerially map rehabilitation areas enabling the company to deliver best-practice.”
Anglo American said it will be spending around $83 million on rehabilitation at the open cut Dawson Mine near Moura, and almost $40 million at Capcoal Open Cut Mine near Middlemount. Rehabilitated areas at its Dawson Mine cover an area greater than 1,800 hectares.
“BMA received environmental certification from the Queensland Government on nearly fifteen hundred hectares of rehabilitated land with 1176 hectares at Gregory Crinum Mine, near Emerald and 294 hectares at the company’s Norwich Park Mine.
BMA’s Asset President James Palmer said: “Queenslanders want to know that miners’ take their responsibilities to the environment seriously.”
Mr Macfarlane said the Queensland resource industry leads the way when it comes to working with all parts of the community to bolster useful and mutually beneficial relationships.
“Last year, the QRC worked with the Palaszczuk Government on significant reforms to the system for the rehabilitation of mines and the development of a financial provisioning scheme for the whole resources sector in Queensland.”
