Retail spending increase highlights renewed confidence after CLP election victory

NT Government

Northern Territory retailers are benefiting from renewed confidence since the CLP’s decisive election victory with new retail figures showing the NT leading the nation in growth in September.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Retail Trade data for September 2024 shows $340 million was spent in the NT, which was up 0.4% from August.

The month-on-month percentage growth was the equal best in the nation, alongside Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia.

The $340 million retail spend in September was 4.9% better than September last year ($324 million) when the former Labor government was in power.

The year-on-year percentage figure was the best in the nation, with Queensland in second spot with a 3.5% increase.

Treasurer Bill Yan said the figures showed confidence had returned to the Territory since the CLP won the election in August with a commanding 17-seat majority.

“The Territory’s reputation took a massive hit under the previous Labor government, and we are now turning the ship around and confidence is returning which will help our hardworking retailers,” said Mr Yan.

“The CLP Government has already delivered our commitments to stimulate housing construction and lower payroll tax for small business so they can invest and grow jobs.

“We will continue to deliver what we told Territorians we would prior to the election and that includes implementing the Territory Coordinator to ensure we can secure and deliver major private sector projects once again.

“It’s time to get the Northern Territory humming again, and this is what we will deliver even though we inherited an $11 billion debt from the failed Labor government.”
