Review of the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman

Australian Treasury

The Albanese Labor Government is committed to supporting small businesses by providing access to advice, assistance and dispute resolution services.

Today we are announcing a review of the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO).

The review will be undertaken by small business expert Ms Judy O’Connell.

Ms O’Connell has extensive experience with the small business sector, previously as Commissioner at the Victorian Small Business Commission and as an Assistant Commissioner at the Australian Taxation Office.

Ms O’Connell will be supported by a secretariat within Treasury, and will report findings and recommendations to the Government in 2025.

The ASBFEO commenced operations in 2016 to provide small businesses and family enterprises with a pathway to government and to make it easier for them to access assistance.

The Terms of Reference for the review are available on the Treasury website and public consultation will take place in the coming months.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Small Business, Julie Collins MP:

“Our Government is committed to making sure the services of the ASBFEO are aligning with the needs of the small business community.

“With the ASBFEO approaching 10 years of operation, it is timely to undertake a broader review of whether the ASBFEO’s functions and operations are effective, efficient, and importantly, that they align with the needs of the small business community.

“Our Government will continue to deliver for Australia’s 2.5 million small businesses, with our Small Business Statement outlining more than $640 million in targeted supports to ease pressure, support growth and level the playing field.”
