Revitalising Public Spaces In Melbourne’s Growing North

VIC Premier

The Andrews Labor Government has unveiled a raft of improvements to public spaces in Lalor including playgrounds, landscaping, public amenities and pedestrian thoroughfares to accommodate the growing community.

Minister for Local Government and Suburban Development Shaun Leane was today joined by Member for Thomastown Bronwyn Halfpenny to officially launch the town’s $4.8 million facelift.

Lalor’s busy heart, including David, Station and Cyprus streets and May Road, has been opened up and better connected with safer pedestrian thoroughfares, fresh landscaping, new public spaces, tables and toilet facilities.

The streetscape upgrade has revitalised an already-popular place for residents and visitors. It also marks the final stage of the Thomastown/Lalor Master Plan to improve public experience, connectedness and safety.

Rochdale Square has also undergone a redevelopment including new barbecue and picnic facilities, upgraded playground, better lighting, landscaping and improved footpaths.

The Labor Government invested almost $2.5 million through its Growing Suburbs Fund and Suburban Revitalisation Program alongside more than $2.3 million from the Whittlesea City Council.

Since 2015, more than 255 projects have been supported by The Growing Suburbs Fund to help boost community connections and services in Melbourne’s fastest-growing regions.

The Suburban Revitalisation Program is a partnership between the Government and local councils, industry and community to improve public amenities, support more jobs and stimulate economies and has so far supported nearly 50 areas including Lalor, Reservoir and Thomastown.

As stated by Minister for Local Government and Suburban Development Shaun Leane

“We’re investing in local communities to deliver upgraded public spaces and infrastructure so that all Victorians have access to the best amenities close to home – these projects ensure fast-growing regions have what they need to thrive.”

As stated by Member for Thomastown Bronwyn Halfpenny

“The improvements we’ve funded in Lalor will be transformational for the local community – making it more vibrant, safer and more connected for residents and a great place for local families to enjoy the outdoors.”
