Design is underway to improve the Amaroo Street and Baden Powell Street intersection on Maroochydore Road just outside Sunshine Plaza
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government would provide $496,000 to upgrade the busy intersection.
“More than 20,000 vehicles use the Baden Powell Street and Amaroo Street intersection each day,” Mr Bailey said.
“Our data shows a trend in crashes involving motorists turning right into Baden Powell Street from Maroochydore Road because the current layout at the intersection means motorists have to wait for a gap in traffic to turn right.
“The proposed improvements will include modifying traffic signals to provide a green arrow for right turns into Baden Powell Street and extending the right-turn lane on Maroochydore Road.”
Mr Bailey said the lane extension would allow more vehicles to queue to turn right and minimise impacts on through traffic using Maroochydore Road.
The proposed upgrade also includes relocating street lighting, modifying drainage and improving signs and linemarking in the area.
Design is scheduled to be completed in September with construction to start in late 2019, weather and construction schedule permitting.
This project is funded under the Palaszczuk Government’s Targeted Road Safety Program (TRSP).
Mr Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government had committed $800 million over four years to make Queensland roads safer.
“We’re able to deliver safety improvements outside Sunshine Plaza thanks to the revenue collected from speed and red-light camera offences,” Mr Bailey said.
“Safety works vary from location to location but share a common goal – reducing Queensland’s road toll.
“Any loss of life on our roads is a tragedy and that’s why the Palaszczuk Government is committed to funding upgrades to make Queensland’s roads and highways safer.”
