Rising stars showcase skills at Townsville PCYC Games

Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services The Honourable Mark Ryan

A vibrant cohort of young emergency service cadets are testing their skills in Townsville today for the annual PCYC Cadet Games.

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan, who was represented at the Games by Member for Mundingburra Les Walker, said the Games, held in partnership with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, were a yearly highlight of the cadet program.

“The Cadet Games is the flagship event for cadets from all disciplines in Queensland, brought together in the name of camaraderie, skill and leadership,” Minister Ryan said.

“Today we have 126 cadets in 21 teams vying for the title of Ultimate Cadet Crew. ”

Mr Walker said the cadets would compete in six main events, with each event drawing on a different combination of skills developed during their cadet training.

“Challenges involve flexible thinking, dynamic skills, cooperation among teams and mentorship with adult leaders and volunteer judges.

“The event helps cadets break down barriers and connect with those who have a similar interest, while fostering healthy competition.

“These young cadets may be the next generation of emergency services, and it’s wonderful to see them grow and have increased confidence for the future.”

QFES Commissioner Greg Leach said the Cadet Games strengthened the relationship between emergency services and defence agencies and was an opportunity for young people to meet mentors and role models.

“Judges at the games are from emergency service or defence agencies, opening the door for cadets to interact with mentors from a variety of roles across the sector,” Commissioner Leach said.

“We always look forward to seeing them combine their skills to meet the challenges of the day and test their ability to work cohesively with other teams, which reflects the agency overlap we often see in emergency services.

“QFES’ partnership with PCYC Queensland helps to develop and mentor young people by giving them the skills they need to be leaders and to work in this field.”

This year’s Cadet Games involves cadets from Emergency Service Cadets, Surf Life Saving Queensland and Australian Navy Cadets programs.
