Local Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest residents and Myall Lakes ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Park visitors should plan ahead when travelling in the area, as construction to relocate 3.2km of the Mungo Brush Road continues.
The relocation of this section of road is due to the continual westward movement of the Dark Point Sand Dune which will soon take over the popular stretch of road, making it impassable to vehicles.
“This work will maintain road access for the local community and commercial business operators,” said NSW ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Hunter Central Coast Director Kylie Yeend.
“The relocation of the road will also provide protection for the dune complex which is a culturally significant, declared Aboriginal Place,” she said.
“Along with the relocation, construction will include a new access road to the Dark Point car park and improved access to the Mungo Walking Track.
“The road surface will be maintained throughout the construction phase to ensure public safety.”
Ms Yeend said the project is running on time with pre-construction works completed, with the next stage seeing construction materials delivered to site.
“The building of the new 3.2 km section of sealed dual lane road has commenced and the project is expected to be completed by December,” Ms Yeend said.
“Motorists can expect some minor delays and an increase in heavy vehicle movements over the next six weeks, so we are asking drivers to be aware of changing conditions and to please drive according to directions.”
The Dark Point and Sandy Point 4WD car parks will be temporarily closed where required and Mungo Walking Track between Robinsons Crossing and Brambles Green track will remain closed during construction.
“The work is part of the NSW government’s commitment to maintaining access to the popular Mungo Brush Road for local residents and visitors to the area. We thank everyone for their patience while the work is completed over the coming months”.
“Mungo Brush Road and Myall Lakes ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Park, including campgrounds, boat ramps and Bombah Point Ferry will remain open, and work has been scheduled outside of peak holiday periods to avoid further disruption.”
