After years of deliberation and delays caused by the 2022 flood event, the long-awaited resolution to the road renaming issue of Cohen Road, Rochester has been finalised.
The road renaming process was initiated by Geographic Names Victoria on behalf of emergency services and has been on hold since the 2022 flood event. The change was given the green light by Geographic Names Victoria at the end of January 2024, with the name change being officially gazetted at the end of February 2024, marking a significant milestone in the community’s journey towards a solution.
Campaspe Shire Council Director of Infrastructure Kate Lemon said that notifications regarding the road renaming were dispatched to residents early this week and that signs will be changed shortly.
“Council has ordered new street name signs, and their installation is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.
“Geographic Names Victoria has also notified essential stakeholders such as Emergency Services, Australia Post, Real Estate Institute of Victoria, Mapping Services, and other government agencies as part of the process,” said Ms Lemon.
The changes to the road names are as follows:
1. Cohen Rd in Rochester, spanning from Zegelin Rd to Sullivan Rd, will be renamed Kingfisher Rd. Properties along this stretch will retain their current property numbers.
2. Cohen Rd in Rochester, running between Pascoe St and Aitken Rd, will now be known as Platypus Rd. New property numbers have been assigned to properties along this segment due to the change.
3. Cohen St in Rochester, extending from Sullivan Rd to Pascoe St, will remain unchanged, with no impact on the residents in this section.
This renaming initiative represents a significant step forward for the Rochester community, aligning street names with local heritage and geography while ensuring a smooth transition for residents.
“We urge all residents to familiarise themselves with the new street names and property numbers to avoid any inconvenience,” Ms Lemon stated.
