Road safety improvements in Katherine East

NT Government

The Northern Territory Labor government is improving road safety for all Territorians, with the duplication of the Stuart Highway at Katherine East.

Jointly delivered with the Australian Government, the upgrades will see the existing two-lane highway upgraded to four-lanes, extending the existing duplication from the Katherine CBD southbound.

In addition to the duplication, a new link road intersection between Cyprus Street and Uralla Road will be constructed, the Uralla Road intersection realigned and safety upgrades applied to the Cyprus Street intersection.

The 1.3 kilometre duplication is well underway, 200 metres before Cyprus Street and extends 300 metres after Uralla Road, connecting to the existing duplication from the Katherine CBD southbound.

To accommodate the construction of these new lanes, the existing roadside Tourist Information Bay will be relocated 700 metres east.

Stormwater, sewer and electrical upgrades will be undertaken as part of the works, to prepare for the second component of the Supporting Growth in Katherine East project.

BMD Urban Works were awarded the tender last year, and works are well underway, with completion expected by April 2023.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“The duplication in Katherine East will enhance safety for road users, increase flood immunity and support the creation of development parcels.

This is a significant project for the people of Katherine, and the Northern Territory Government is committed to supporting the growth of all areas of the Territory.

Better roads means safer trips to work and school, and reliable roads are essential for keeping regional communities connected.”
