The second stage of the upgrade at Sunset Cove, Paynesville has begun.
The work involves sealing the carpark, which was relocated as part of the project’s first stage, landscaping and improving drainage. Power will also be connected to the barbecue.
A well-used walking trail travels through the Sunset Cove recreation area.
This has been taken into consideration and pedestrian access to the playground, barbecue, lake and walking track will always be available during the project.
However, to allow the works to be completed, carparking will be temporarily moved further down Sunset Drive to before the toilet block.
The project is part of the Paynesville Foreshore Management Plan and will cost $150,000, funded by council. It is expected to take 12 weeks to complete.
The improved layout of the area separates vehicles from pedestrians, and also locates the playground further away from the car park.
By realigning the way vehicles travel through the area, council is also protecting the remnant tree species. Previously, their roots were subject to soil compaction.
This new layout was proposed in the Paynesville Foreshore Management Plan.
The plan, which involved community consultation, identified the Sunset Cove upgrade and the separation of the car park and people as one of the highest community priorities for the Paynesville foreshore.
Mayor Cr John White said it was pleasing to see the area being rejuvenated.
“The old arrangement had cars close to the playground, barbecue, and the footpath linking the cove with Newlands Drive.
“This project separates cars from where people gather, and formalises the parking in the area,” Cr White said.
“This will allow people to enjoy spending time at Sunset Cove for many years to come.”
