Rockin’ around the Christmas tree with Carols by Candlelight

Townsville City Council’s Carols by Candlelight is just a sleigh-ride around the corner and comes with a brand new location for the city to Celebrate Christmas Together.

Carols by Candlelight is making a move from the big top at Reid Park to a concert under the stars and on the grass at Riverway Stadium.

Santa Claus is coming to town, and so is 2018 ARIA award winner for Best Children’s Album, Justine Clarke, a popular children’s musician, actor and author as the headline act.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Carols by Candlelight is a fantastic family event and a great way to bring the city together.

“Carols is always a family favourite and each year Council likes to think of ways to make it better for the community,” Cr Hill said.

“Justine Clarke is a fantastic headline act, and we have lots of local performers taking part in bringing Christmas to the suburbs.

“I’m really looking forward to our beautiful new location and listening to Christmas Carols under the stars and seeing residents dressed for the weather to match our tropical theme.”

Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said Carols by Candlelight is a fantastic way to showcase local talent and bring the community together.

“I’m extremely excited to see all our talented performers on stage and singing renditions of Christmas carols,” Cr Doyle said.

“We held auditions for Carols earlier in the year and the program is filled with solo artists, duos and groups including the TheatreiNQ, Townsville Choral Society Choir, and of course our fantastic 1RAR band.

“I’m very excited for the magic of Carols at the beautiful new location.”

Local Councillor Verena Coombe said Riverway is a fantastic location that gives the community a chance to make a day out of the event.

“A star-lit concert with Riverway as a backdrop is perfect for such a popular family event – residents can go for a swim, have a picnic and then set up for Carols all in the one area,” Cr Coombe said.

“Council wants Carols to be a relaxing and enjoyable family outing – there will be free parking available at 1300 Smiles Stadium and a Park’N’Ride will run to Riverway every 15 minutes to help manage traffic into the area.

“It’s great that we can bring some of the Christmas festivities to the suburbs and Celebrate Christmas Together.”

Guests will be able to purchase safe flame candles for $3 with all proceeds going to the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal.
