  • The Centre will increase community connection and offer support for young people
  • Members of the City of Rockingham’s Youth Work and Youth Development teams to relocate from the City’s administration building
  • Rockingham residents aged between 12-24 expected to increase by 10,600 by 2036
  • Premier Mark McGowan today presented a Lotterywest grant of $985,000 to the City of Rockingham for the fit-out and refurbishment of the Rockingham Youth Centre.

The Centre, which is located in the heart of Rockingham on Mackinnon Street, aims to create a safe space where young people can hang out without the fear of being moved on, and learn new skills in ways they can relate to.

When up and running, the Centre will host a range of early intervention and prevention workshops, skill development sessions, forums and community events alongside leadership programs including: Youth Reference Group, Junior Council, Skate Park Reference Group, and employability, life skills and recreation and cultural skills development opportunities; as well as being a place to meet friends and have fun.

The Centre will also house spaces for study, along with leadership, art and recreation programs.

The number of Rockingham residents aged 12-24 is expected to increase by about 10,600 by 2036, so it’s important vital infrastructure and services are in place to cater for growing demand.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

“I am proud to support my local community in building resources that will allow the younger members of Rockingham to connect with their City.

“This Centre will host a range of workshops that will develop life skills and become a hub for young residents to take positive steps towards their future.

“The Rockingham Youth Centre will be a space for young people to make their own, ensuring they have somewhere to go that’s safe and empowers them to develop skills for their future.

“Rockingham is one of the fastest growing cities in the State and projects like this are helping to create a prosperous and well connected community.”
