Rottnest embraces continued visitor growth

  • Record-breaking visitor numbers continue for Rottnest Island
  • Almost 325,000 visitors to Rottnest over the 2018-19 summer
  • Increase of four per cent on last summer’s record visitation
  • Rottnest Island continues to welcome a record number of visitors to its shores, with visitors flocking to Western Australia’s island paradise.

The McGowan Government’s active support and promotion of Rottnest Island since taking office in March 2017 has led to a massive growth in visitor numbers.

New figures show a four per cent increase in visitor numbers over the summer, improving on 2017-18’s record-breaking summer season.

The island’s growing appeal is underscored by additional activities for visitors, extra ferry services, successful marketing campaigns, celebrity visitors and quokka selfies.

The Rottnest Island Authority is preparing for a busy autumn season, with this year’s April school holidays including the Easter public holidays and the island’s Anzac Day dawn service.

As noted by Tourism Minister Paul Papalia:

“Record visitor numbers continue to show that Rottnest is a favourite destination for local, interstate and international visitors.

“As visitor numbers grow, Rottnest continues to look for ways to improve the visitor experience to ensure the island’s appeal will continue into the future.

“Since 2017, nine new businesses have started on the island and 83 new eco tents have increased accommodation options, with a further 80 rooms expected as part of the Hotel Rottnest expansion.

“We’ve also seen a dramatic increase in the number of volunteer guides with over 300 volunteers helping to champion the island’s natural and cultural history, and provide the hugely popular ‘Meet the Quokka’ tour.”
