The Royal Australian Mint (the Mint) has been honoured as one of Australia’s best cultural tourism destination at the 2021 Australian Tourism Awards.
This prestigious award exemplifies the Mint as a thriving tourism destination that fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of authentic culture, history and heritage.
Leigh Gordon, the Mint’s CEO, notes that the award win honours the dedicated staff who have shown commitment to telling the Australian story through coins, even during a difficult year.
“It is an honour to receive this recognition from the national tourism industry. It has been a disruptive year for tourist destinations, however, our Visitor and Education Services team have continued to deliver an authentic and meaningful experience to our visitors.”
As international and domestic tourism begins to ramp up, the Mint is preparing for a big year.
“The Mint has developed an extensive exhibition and public programs schedule for 2022. The first three months of the year has already seen thousands of people come through our doors to uncover the art, science and history of coins and coin making.
“We expect these visitor numbers to continue to increase, especially as school excursion groups return this month.
“We are excited to be able to welcome people from across Australia and around the world back to the Mint to experience the wonder of coins.”
Visitors to the Mint will enjoy special access to Australia’s coin history and production. With free exhibitions and tours offered daily, and the chance to walk above the factory floor, the Mint is a must-see when in Canberra.
