Safer Advancetown intersection

Minister for Transport and Main Roads The Honourable Mark Bailey

The Palaszczuk Government will start work next month on the $3.5 million Nerang-Murwillumbah Road and Beechmont Road intersection upgrade.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said part of a $37.5 million package of works to drive safety along the length of Nerang-Murwillumbah Road, the upgrade would see a horizontal stretch of the road realigned, alongside a channelised right-turn into Beechmont Road.

“For many people in the community and visiting tourists, this road and this intersection are key connectors to our hiking spots, lookouts, waterways and places like Lower Beechmont, Springbrook and the Numinbah Valley,” Mr Bailey said.

“It’s why we’re investing $37.5 million to make all 30-plus kilometres of Nerang-Murwillumbah Road safer, starting with this intersection upgrade.

“Importantly it’ll also support jobs during construction, alongside the 3,800 being created as part of our $4.5 billion roads and transport investment in the region.

“The vast majority of crashes continue to be cause by the fatal five and people not driving to conditions, but this upgrade will help reduce the likelihood of head-on crashes and crashes during wet weather.”

The intersection upgrade will continue for about six months, with other works on the $37.5 million package to begin later in 2021 following the completion of detailed designs.

Mr Bailey urged drivers to follow road signage and traffic controllers during construction.
