Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal

Australia’s Biggest Doorknock, The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal is on this weekend

More than 50,000 volunteers across Australia will today help raise vital funds for The Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Appeal.

The Red Shield Appeal now in its 55th year, aims to raise $8 million to help Aussies doing it tough.

The money raised from the Appeal will go towards The Salvation Army’s vast network of social services to help Aussies in need.

The Salvation Army’s ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Secretary for Communications, Lieut-Colonel Neil Venables, says those who volunteer play a critical role in giving a hand up to some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in our community.

“Hardship does not discriminate. More Australians from all walks of life are turning to The Salvation Army for help and we need the public’s support now more than ever to ensure we can help those doing it tough,”

Just $28 helps children at risk of homelessness participate in an after-school program, $60 provides a food hamper so that a struggling family doesn’t have to go hungry, and $79 provides one day of support for a family to find a home. Even a relatively small contribution can have an immeasurable impact on someone’s life.

The Salvation Army has a dedicated and trusted history assisting Australians in need. For more than 135 years we have been committed to helping those in need, but Lieut-Colonel Venables says the Salvos can only continue to meet these needs with the public’s support.

“We cannot do this alone,” he says. “We all have the opportunity to be beacons of hope for others and by being as generous as possible when you see a Red Shield Appeal collector today, you will be giving hope where it’s needed most.”

Over the past 12 months, the Salvos have supported more than 38,000 people experiencing homelessness, 14,000 people overcoming addiction, provided over 50,000 financial counselling sessions, given care to 5,000 people experiencing family violence, and assisted more than 150,000 people with emergency relief.
