To celebrate Christmas, Wollongong City Libraries is offering a personalised mail service for their littlest library members to send a letter to Santa.
Our librarians have built and installed mailboxes so that children can make sure that their Christmas wish list arrives at the North Pole with plenty of time to spare.
Want to post a letter? All letters addressed to Santa can be dropped off at your favourite Library up until Saturday 12 December. The best part is that all letters are answered.
“This is a lovely tradition that started at Dapto Library in 2013. Since then, our libraries have continued to serve their youngest library members by making sure that letters to Santa are safely delivered,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.
“Our staff care deeply about their community and this is a fun tradition that some librarians really enjoy getting involved in. Santa is a very busy person, so our staff will be working hard to make sure that every child who participates receives a reply from Santa.”
Lisa Beverstock from Wollongong Library says the Santa’s Mailbox Christmas activity is a joy for all staff who get involved as they get to make a small but meaningful impact.
“I remember a sweet letter from a little girl starting at a new school who was very frightened. Santa wrote a reply letting her know how smart, interesting and strong she was. A few days later, Mum came to the Library in tears saying that her little girl had slept the whole night without nightmares for the first time in weeks,” said Lisa.
“Another time we had a boy who didn’t address his letter because ‘Santa knows where I live!’. Santa had the librarians do a bit of sleuthing and through clever deductions we were able to send a response to the right address. His parents rang later to say that the look on his face when the letter arrived was priceless.”
It’s not too late to participate! Simply post your letter at your participating Library by Saturday 12 December.
“Last year Corrimal Library received 30 letters. This year six of our libraries are participating as Santa’s Mailbox locations, so we’re expecting to receive hundreds of letters from our community,” said Cr Bradbery.
“Don’t forget to include your address on your letter before posting it. That way Santa and his Librarian helpers can make sure that you receive your reply quickly.”
