The Sapphires. You’ve seen the movie, now see the stage show – right here at the Swan Hill Town Hall.
Set in 1968, during landmark changes to Aboriginal rights, it tells the story of a singing group of four young Yorta Yorta women, discovered by a talent scout at St Kilda’s Tiki Club. He convinces them to tour Vietnam to sing classic soul songs for the troops.
The Sapphires is inspired by the true story of writer and director Tony Briggs’ mother.
While the show explores issues around race, prejudice and acceptance, it is an energetic play that affirms life and the realisation of dreams.
And it includes lots of Motown tunes that you will know and love – like Respect and I Heard It Through The Grapevine.
It is the first time the show has toured regionally.
“To take this show into communities it really resonates with and who don’t usually get to see musicals like this is so important,” cast member Lorinda Merrypor said.
“I’m so excited to tell the story of these four incredible women.”
