Children heading back to school this week may notice new/upgraded pedestrian crossings and footpaths near their school.
It’s all part of an $8.57 million school pedestrian safety program which is being rolled out to 32 Northern Beaches schools.
Assisted by funding from the Commonwealth government’s Federal Stimulus – School Infrastructure Program, Council has completed pedestrian safety works at almost half of the 32 schools.
Mayor Michael Regan said pedestrian safety around schools was a top priority, and through this program school pedestrian crossings, new footpaths, new shared user paths and safety infrastructure such as kerb ramps will be constructed, upgraded or replaced.
“Works have so far been completed at schools from Balgowlah to Forestville and Bayview.
“A raised pedestrian crossing is being constructed across Playfair Road near Curl Curl North Public School too, ahead of schedule.
“This is an exciting program which will ensure we improve safety for our kids and community around our schools,” Mayor Regan said.
“We have been working on a Safer Schools program for some time with the school community to identify hotspot areas which need safety upgrades.”
