Work is on schedule as an extensive two year geotechnical hazard study of Seal Rocks Road to assess the road’s stability proceeds.
MidCoast Council’s consultants, Coffey Services Australia commenced the study last August after several landslips impacted the road over the last decade.
The consultants completed geotechnical drilling along the road reserves and within the Seal Rock Caravan park late last year.
The next site investigations will use specialised scientific techniques over two days from Monday 31 January on both Number One and Boat beaches, weather permitting. There will also be some more investigation work undertaken along the road shoulder.
The techniques used on the beaches are non-invasive – they will not penetrate the sand physically. A hand-held, thin steel rod will be used on the road shoulder investigation to penetrate the ground to find the underlying rock.
In addition, the study will include a review of existing relevant documentation and data, along with assessment of future conditions affecting the shoreline including erosion and sea level rise.
The study is expected to be finalised by July 2022, with community consultation later this year to share the findings and explore the options for the future of the road.
