SeaLink ferry service to continue for another five years

1 November 2024

The CLP Government has signed a new five-year agreement with SeaLink to operate passenger ferry services between Darwin, Mandorah and the Tiwi Islands (Wurrumiyanga).

Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure Bill Yan said the agreement gave thousands of Territorians peace of mind that they wouldn’t be left stranded.

“The previous government let this contract fall over, and the residents of Mandorah and Tiwi Islands were about to be left without a ferry service, which would have been disastrous for thousands of Territorians by severing access to critical education and health services,” he said.

“Thankfully, we were made aware of this situation in our first two weeks of government, and we have worked hard to get this new deal done.”

SeaLink has delivered the Darwin, Mandorah and Tiwi Islands ferry services for over a decade.

“We are committed to providing safe and reliable transport services for Territorians, and we know that this is an essential service for residents, tourists and local businesses in the Top End region,” said Mr Yan.

“We will work closely with SeaLink to continue to strengthen the delivery of these important services.”

Donna Gauci, CEO of SeaLink Marine & Tourism, highlighted the significance of the contract extension and SeaLink’s long-standing relationship with the Northern Territory community.

“We are thrilled to have secured this extension and to continue serving the Mandorah and Tiwi Islands communities,” she said.

“Our ferries play a vital role in keeping these regions connected to Darwin, supporting both locals and visitors.

“As we look to the future, we remain focused on enhancing our essential transport services, as well as supporting regional and cultural tourism, and contributing to the growth and prosperity of the Northern Territory.”
