Seasonal update sessions to be delivered

A series of seasonal updates will be held at Calivil, Rochester, Stanhope and Kerang in late February focussing on commodity outlooks and cropping options.

These free cross-industry sessions are designed to assist farmers with upcoming sowing, irrigation and stock feeding decisions.

At these sessions, the latest ‘situation and outlook’ information will be provided for the climate, irrigation water availability and for hay and grain.

Irrigated and dryland cropping and forage options will be discussed and management tips will be given for optimal use of limited irrigation water.

Agriculture Victoria Senior Irrigation Officer Rob O’Connor said the sessions were about assisting irrigators make informed and early decisions, given the tough season.

“The short and long-term climate outlook for the irrigation districts and for the catchments that feed our dams will be presented, along with the levels of certainty of these outlooks,” Mr O’Connor said.

“Recent climate trends will also be discussed with an explanation of why they have occurred. Information will be provided on the effects of recent bush fires, the drought and international issues on hay and grain prices.

“Alternative feeds will also be considered. Plus, there will be general tips on buying feed for your stock to ensure you get bang for buck.”

The sessions will feature expert speakers:

  • Damian Jones, Agronomist, Irrigated Cropping Council
  • Colin Peace, Director, Jumbuck Ag
  • Graeme Anderson, Climate Specialist, Agriculture Victoria
  • Andrew Shields, Manager River Operations Planning, Goulburn-Murray Water.
