Robotic-assisted surgery is continuing to expand across Mater’s South Brisbane campus with the addition of a second da Vinci system.

The new system has replaced an earlier da Vinci model at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane, which has been transferred to support surgeons and patients Mater Hospital Brisbane.

The da Vinci surgical system provides surgeons with an advanced set of instruments to use in performing robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery.

Using highly magnified, 3D high-definition views of the surgical area, the system enables surgeons to perform complex procedures through small incisions.

Jennifer Pitt, General Manager of Mater Private Hospital Brisbane and Mater Hospital Brisbane, said Mater was committed to the use of innovative, advanced technologies to improve patient care.

“The da Vinci system has proven its value to Mater over several years,” Ms Pitt said.

“The benefits for patients include shorter hospitalisations, faster recovery times and less pain and discomfort.

“The technology has been embraced by surgeons and our perioperative teams and it’s great news for our public patients that this system is now available at MHB.”

Almost 300 da Vinci cases were completed at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane last year, with gynaecology (100 cases), urology (95), hepatobiliary (26) and colorectal (65) patients benefiting most.

Mater’s first da Vinci system was purchased in 2016 thanks to the support of Mater Foundation.

Da Vinci systems are also now operating at Mater Private Hospital Townsville and Mater Private Hospital Mackay.
